West Valley earns 'A' Hospital Safety Grade

West Valley Medical Center earned an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit watchdog focused on patient safety. Leapfrog assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” grade to hospitals across the country based on over 30 measures of errors, accidents, injuries and infections as well as systems hospitals have in place to prevent them.

“West Valley Medical Center is pleased to have been awarded an A rating from the Leapfrog Group’s Hospital Safety Grade. We recognize the importance of measuring quality and safety in patient care and are proud of our dedicated physicians, nurses, and colleagues who provide our patients with exceptional care each day,” said Nicholas Manning, chief executive officer, West Valley Medical Center.

"In an effort to continue to improve patient safety, we recently embedded day-to-day clinical practices to drive our culture of vigilance and continuous improvement," said Monique Healey, Director of Quality and Risk.  "The efforts reflected below are just a portion of the high-reliability strategies we champion every day. We’re proud of the work our teams do across disciplines to ensure that patient safety is not just a goal—but a standard."

West Valley Medical Center implements the Clinical Safety Improvement Program each year to proactively improve safety measures and outcomes for patients. Additionally, West Valley and HCA Healthcare’s Sepsis Predication and Optimization of Therapy (SPOT) is helping clinicians detect sepsis up to 18 hours sooner. The algorithm-driven, real-time sepsis alert system has been called a “smoke detector for sepsis”.

Another program at West Valley, called enhanced surgical recovery, is helping patients achieve a more successful pre and post-surgical process. The program is aimed at utilizing effective pain management without opioids and reducing length of stay in the hospital for patients as well as potential complications.

Here are some additional programs focused on safety:

1. Antibiotic Stewardship Program

West Valley colleagues are working together to actively reduce the use of unnecessary antibiotics to combat resistance, preserve the effectiveness of these life-saving drugs, and protect our patients from potential side effects. This program ensures our prescribing practices are guided by evidence, not habit.

2. Fall and Surgical Site Infection Prevention

Leaders continuously analyze data and refine practices to minimize in-hospital falls and prevent surgical site infections—two of the most common, and preventable, safety risks.

3. Bladder Management & Device Utilization

Our colleagues are reducing unnecessary Foley catheter use through a bladder management program focused on patient comfort, infection prevention, and preserving mobility.

4. Non-Ventilator Hospital-Acquired Pneumonia (NVHAP) Initiative

Targeting one of the most under-recognized hospital threats, West Valley is proactively reducing NVHAP by emphasizing oral hygiene and early mobility for non-ventilated patients—simple steps that can have a life-saving impact.

5. Sepsis & Stroke Response Excellence

In time-sensitive emergencies, seconds matter. Our teams are trained and equipped to exceed national benchmarks for sepsis and stroke care, ensuring rapid identification, intervention, and treatment when it matters most.

“Achieving an ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade reflects enormous dedication to patient safety,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “I extend my congratulations to West Valley Medical Center, its leadership, clinicians, staff and volunteers for creating a culture where patients come first.”

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade stands as the only hospital ratings program focused solely on preventable medical errors, infections and injuries that kill more than 500 patients a day in the United States. This program is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
