How to Perform Infant CPR Text

How Do You Perform Infant CPR?

Check to see if the infant is responsive

Try flicking the bottom of the baby's foot to see if he responds.

If the infant responds to your voice or touch

Check the baby for injuries or bleeding and call 9-1-1.

If the baby is unresponsive

have someone call 9-1-1 while you get ready perform CPR.

Check for breathing

  1. If he is face down, support his head and neck and roll him over so that he is face-up and his back is strait.
  2. Tilt the baby's head back slightly and lift his chin.
  3. Check if the infant is breathing. Act quickly - Check for no more than 10 seconds.
  4. Remember that intermittant gasps are not signs that the baby is breathing normally.

Give 2 rescue breaths

  1. With the baby's ead still tilted back, use your mouth to make a comlete seal over the infant's mouth and nose.
  2. Blow for one second and make sure the chest rises visibly.
  3. Then, give another rescue breath.

If the infant's chest doesn't rise

  • Give 30 chest compressions. Make sure the infant is on a firm and flat surface.
  • Push hard and fast, 100 compressions per minute - in the middle of the infant's chest.

If the chest rises but still isn't breathing

  • Check the infants mouth and throat for obstructions.
  • Remove any object from the baby's airway, then resume rescue breaths.

The Red Cross reccomends that you continue to perform CPR until:

  • The infant breathes again.
  • A person trained in CPR or an ambulance arrives.
  • You become too tired to continue.
  • The surrounding area becomes unsafe.
