Professional practice manager tool aids evaluation effectiveness

We are excited to be launching the new Professional Practice Manager (PPM) tool. HCA Healthcare has developed this easy-to-use program to support our efforts around Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluation (OPPE).

OPPE is not only a regulatory standard to ensure ongoing clinical competence and professionalism but also provides our medical staff leadership with an objective analysis on outcomes and identifies opportunities for improvement at an aggregate and at an individual level.

The PPM is under the purview of our peer-protected patient safety organization. Provider specific data will only be shared with the associated provider and the peer-review committee as necessary. Most of the data is collected based upon final billing and providers can drill all the way down to patient-specific data to review their personal data. A sneak preview was presented at the April Business Meeting noting the following:

Benefits:

  • Access to timely data that can help providers improve safety and quality of patient care.
  • Provider benchmark comparison, which includes full patient drill-in.
  • Meets the OPPE requirements and is electronic to improve efficiency.

Opportunities:

  • For information security and privacy reasons, access is only available within the HCA Firewall. It should be available with remote access.
  • Limited data for mid-level providers due to coding on final billing which typically roles to the physician level.

West Valley is planning to roll out our first reports using this tool in July utilizing data from the first six months of 2019. A report will be generated and initially will be reviewed by the CMO (me). The review will then be emailed to the providers for evaluation. Each provider should be reviewing their data for potential improvement or confirmation of achievement related to the effectiveness of their professional practice in all competencies.

We've been sending printed OPPE reports for years now but are always looking for ways to make improvements to the tool and make the data meaningful for your practice. We are excited to share this tool with you in order to better collaborate with our providers in improving patient care. We will continue to seek feedback during this roll out and for future enhancements.

Thank you!

Rich
