CEO Introduction
Employee Engagement
Betsy Hunsicker
CEO
In May, we asked our employees to provide feedback about their work environment here at West Valley. I am pleased to report that we saw meaningful improvement in our overall engagement – from 81% to 85%, which put us at #19 in HCA – out of 186 hospitals. Our overall engagement score of 85% was 11% better than HCA overall and 12% better than the survey benchmark.
Nursing engagement improved by 9% - from 79% to 88%. This put us at #4 in HCA – out of 186 hospitals! This engagement is evident in our reduced RN turnover.
Engaged employees mean safer care and a better environment for you and your patients. We saw improvement in nearly every department in the hospital and increased scores in all but two questions on the survey. Please join me in congratulating the department leaders and the staff on creating an environment for themselves of which they are proud and enthusiastic.
Leadership Update
Jennifer Opsut
COO
Geoff Hill
CFO
You may have seen some news about the leadership team at West Valley this summer. As you know, West Valley is the source of many of the hospital leaders throughout the Treasure Valley as well as throughout HCA. Jennifer Opsut, Chief Operating Officer, will be leaving us to join former West Valley alums at Alaska Regional Hospital in Anchorage. Jennifer has been with West Valley since 2010 and has a great impact on our organization – from the rural clinics to cardiology and everything in between. We will miss her but know she will be tremendously successful in Alaska. The search for a new COO is underway.
Geoff Hill, Chief Financial Officer, will be rejoining the West Valley team on Monday, July 23. Geoff had a brief stint in Houston at a facility recently acquired by HCA. He quickly realized bigger is not better – just like the billboards say – and he is returning home to West Valley. We are thrilled to have him back.
Medical Staff Leadership Update
We have had a few changes in our medical staff leadership for a few different reasons. As you know, we adopted new Medical Staff Bylaws earlier this year, which resulted in some changes in the Medical Executive Committee (MEC) membership. We would like to take a moment to thank Dr. Ron Cornwell, who fulfilled the thankless job of Bylaws chair the last couple of years as we worked through these new bylaws. We also want to thank Dr. Joe Llenos, Ethics committee chair, and Dr. Brent Baldwin, Infection control committee chair – who still serve in those roles, but no longer are required to attend MEC. Additionally, we have a change in our ED Medical Director. Dr. Brian Moss will be stepping down as medical director. Dr. Moss has been instrumental in our transition to our new ED group and has integrated himself into our medical staff community seamlessly. We will miss having his leadership but look forward to his continued role as ED doctor extraordinaire. Assuming his place is Dr. Justin Sempsrott. I am confident Dr. Sempsrott will be an enthusiastic and passionate leader and help continue to push forward our Emergency Department initiatives around quality, volume, and throughput.
Below is a listing of our Medical Staff committee chairs. We are grateful and fortunate to have their time and energy to serve in these roles. MEC meets the third Thursday of every month and other individuals may be invited to Medical Executive Committee meetings as guests, without vote.
