CEO Introduction
Betsy Hunsicker
CEO
I am proud to announce that West Valley was named by Modern Healthcare as one of the nation’s top places to work! This is our fourth time receiving this honor. The award was granted based on information we provide about benefits, governance, and culture, as well as a random survey of our employees. It is a great reflection of the engagement of our employees.
On that note, each year we survey our employees to measure our engagement. Engagement is defined as: “The extent to which employees are motivated to contribute to organizational success, and are willing to apply discretionary effort to accomplishing tasks important to the achievement of organizational goals.” Therefore, it isn’t about being happy or loving absolutely everything about your job. It’s about being committed to the success of your department and to the organization and going over and above to do what’s necessary.
In 2017, we scored 81% on the Employee Engagement Index – this is a composite measure of four questions that ask how much do you like your job, would you recommend West Valley as a place to work, how often do you think about looking for another job, and are you proud to be working for West Valley. Our 81% was 8% better than the HCA average and 9% better than the healthcare average. We were #29 out of 191 HCA Hospitals – so in the top 15% of the company. The key drivers of this engagement center around realistic expectations for work, the vision and strategy for the future, and our commitment to quality. These were all strengths for West Valley upon which we will continue to build.
Each department takes their results and formulates action plans based on the feedback. We check in throughout the year on the progress the department is making on their action plan to ensure that we do everything we can to help West Valley retain and attract the best people in the area.
Our work environment is a product of every person here at West Valley, so these are OUR results. I’m proud of our department leaders who foster this environment where our staff feel respected, supported, and heard. I’m proud of our staff who come to work every day prepared to put forth the discretionary effort our patients and providers deserve and need.
