As students across our community prepare to return to school, West Valley Medical Center is committed to ensuring that our children and educators remain safe and healthy. The ongoing impact of Covid-19 and other seasonal germs continues to be a concern, and we want to share vital information and best practices to help mitigate risks and promote a safe learning environment.
"We are seeing an uptick of Covid-19 and other respiratory illnesses in the area right now. It's really important for parents to stay vigilant in taking precautions to keep themselves and their children healthy this school year," said Dr. Richard Augustus, West Valley Medical Center chief medical officer.
Key safety tips for a healthy school year
Vaccinations and boosters
Ensure that students are up-to-date on all recommended vaccinations. Immunizations play a critical role in preventing illness and protecting community health.
Hand hygiene
Encourage frequent handwashing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Hand sanitizers with at least 60% alcohol are a good alternative when soap and water are not available.
Respiratory etiquette
Teach students to cover their mouth and nose with a tissue or their elbow when coughing or sneezing. Dispose of tissues properly and wash hands immediately after.
Healthy habits
Promote healthy lifestyle choices such as adequate sleep, balanced nutrition, and regular physical activity. These habits can strengthen the immune system and support overall well-being.
Symptom awareness
Monitor students for symptoms of illness and keep them home if they are unwell. Symptoms of Covid-19 can include fever, cough, and shortness of breath, among others. If a student shows symptoms, consult a healthcare professional for guidance.
At West Valley Medical Center, we are dedicated to supporting the health and safety of our community. We encourage parents, students, and school staff to follow these guidelines and work together to create a safe and productive school environment.
