Bariatric service line

Dr. David Brown completed his first Sleeve Gastrectomy at West Valley in September! We are thrilled to expand access for bariatric and metabolic care to those in the Western Treasure Valley. Dr. David Brown will also be performing Roux en Y procedures. Learn more about our bariatric service line.

SPY Portable Handheld Imager (SPY-PHI)

Approved by the CVAT Committee, the SPY-PHI is an imaging system used in capturing and viewing fluorescence images for the visual assessment of blood flow as an adjunctive method for the evaluation of tissue perfusion, and related tissue-transfer circulation in tissue and free flaps used in plastic, micro- and reconstructive surgical procedures. The SPY-PHI is intended to provide fluorescence images for the visual assessment of blood flow in vessels and related tissue perfusion during gastrointestinal surgical procedures.

NRG Transseptal Needle

Approved by the CVAT committee as a safer option and less complications. The NRG Transseptal Needle by Baylis Medical provides a method for physician access to the left atrium by using RF energy instead of mechanical penetration. Indications: Creation of an atrial septal defect in the heart. Secondary applications include transseptal heart access, monitoring intracardiac pressures, sampling blood, and infusing solutions.

In progress

CAT scan

In addition to our current CT technology at the main hospital campus, a second GE CT 64 slice scanner will be installed in the hospital by year end to allow redundancy.

Interventional radiology suite

Plans are underway to replace our original interventional fluoroscopy suite; this allows us to further our advancements in providing a minimally invasive, minimal dose, image-guided procedural environment.

Emergency department expansion - behavioral health rooms

We received funding to expand our Emergency Department to add a behavioral health suite. The expansion will allow us to provide a safer environment for this at-risk population. Additionally, the suite will offer additional accommodations for those patients that may be waiting for placement for a prolonged period. Architectural designs are in development.

Mazor X

Spine robotics is coming back to West Valley! The Mazor X by Medtronic is scheduled to be delivered to our OR by year end. The only one of its kind in the Treasure Valley, the Mazor X enables physicians to create a 3D blueprint of the surgery in advance using each patient’s unique spine anatomy. The surgeons then make incisions and place implants in the exact preplanned locations, using the robotic‐assistance system to guide their tools according to the customized surgical blueprint.

Hemasorb/SURGIFLO Hemostatic Matrix

Approved by the CVAT Committee in September, SURGIFLO Hemostatic Matrix mixed with sterile saline or thrombin solution, is indicated in surgical procedures (other than ophthalmic) as an adjunct to hemostasis when control of bleeding by ligature or other conventional methods is ineffective or impractical.

Inspire 3028 Neurostimulator

Brought before the CVAT Committee this product has been conditionally approved for a trial of five cases. The Inspire is used to treat patients with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea who cannot tolerate or fail to respond to positive airway pressure treatments. The MR-conditional system includes a generator, a breathing sensor lead, and a stimulation lead that are implanted under the skin near the patient’s upper torso. The stimulation lead is programmed to stimulate the hypoglossal nerve (cranial nerve XII) under the chin in time with the patient's breaths as detected by the sensor lead implanted near the lungs. The stimulation moves the tongue and opens the airway. The programming settings can be modified by a physician after implantation to optimize performance. The system also includes an external sleep remote to control the system.

On the horizon

BHU Expansion is pending funding to expand adult inpatient behavioral health beds and add adolescent inpatient behavioral health beds.

Ambulatory Surgery Center and FSED

HCA Healthcare is planning an Ambulatory Surgery Center to be located in Ada County. We are currently working with physician partners to make that venture a success. Additionally, we feel that the Treasure Valley has ideal locations with care gaps for a freestanding emergency department; we are currently pursuing that project and the associated funding.

Clinical Value Analysis Team (CVAT)

Ginna Maggard

Clinical Value Analysis Team (CVAT) is a physician-led, data-driven and patient-focused initiative to bring physician preference items (PPI) into use at the hospital based on evidence. We have found the most successful submissions have strong clinical evidence and overwhelming, if not unanimous, support from the physician-led committee.
