3D Mammography – Breast Tomosynthesis
The 3D Mammography exam allows doctors to examine your breast tissue layer by layer. Instead of viewing all of the complexities of your breast tissue in a flat image, as with conventional 2D mammography, fine details are more visible and no longer hidden by the tissue above or below.
3D Mammography is more accurate, detecting 41% more invasive breast cancers. 3D Mammography has also been shown to reduce false positives by up to 40%.
Breast Tomosynthesis is DIFFERENT than digital mammography
- Digital mammography is an x-ray along a 2-dimensional (2D) plane.
- Breast Tomosynthesis (3D Mammogram) takes a series of images, converts them into a 3-dimensional image at the same time as your 2D mammogram, and allows the Radiologist to evaluate every millimeter of your breast separately.
Is the 3D exam different?
The 3D mammography exam is very similar to having a conventional 2D mammogram. Like a 2D mammogram, our technologist will position you, compress your breast, and take images from different angles.
There is no additional compression required with the 3D exam, and it only takes a few seconds longer for each view.
Our technologist will view the images of your breasts at the computer workstation to ensure quality images have been captured for review. A radiologist will then examine the images and report results to either your physician or directly to you.
Who can have a 3D exam?
A 3D exam is available for all women who would undergo a standard mammogram. Multiple clinical studies show that all women, regardless of breast type or density, benefit from a 3D exam. 3D mammography is better for women who:
- Are having a mammogram for the first time
- Have dense breasts
- Have a prior history of breast cancer
- Are at high risk for breast cancer
What about radiation?
Very low x-ray energy is used during the exam, just about the same as a film-screen mammogram. The total patient dose of a 3D exam is within the FDA safety standards for mammography.
